Starting Tuesday, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi Inc. will begin selling its latest device, the Redmi 2, in India for $112 or 6,999 rupees, less than half the price of similar Samsung or Apple iPhones on the market.
India�s largest online marketplace, Flipkart, will allow Indians to preorder the smartphone beginning 6 p.m. Thursday, Xiaomi executives said at an event in New Delhi. China�s top-selling smartphone maker said it also plans to sell its MiPad tablet for 12,999 or $207 on Flipkart next week.
Redmi 2 comes after its predecessor, the Redmi 1S, was a hit with India�s smartphone users. Xiaomi sold 100,000 units within 4.2 seconds of its launch in July and has since sold over one million handsets in the country. The Redmi 1S was priced at 5,999 rupees
